1053 – Death of Godwin, Earl of Wessex
Earl Godwin was a nobleman who played an important role toward the end of the reign of Aethelred II and during the reign of Cnut the Great. He was closely related to Cnut’s family as his wife Gytha’s brother Jarl Ulf was married to Cnut’s sister Estrid. He died on this day, apparently after having a stroke at a royal banquet. His daughter Edith will be queen consort of England, and his son Harold, king of England (see Encyclopaedia Britannica).
