1014 – Battle of Clontarf

Brian Boru, most important king in Ireland, fights with Vikings at his side, against the Dublin Vikings led by Sitric who was married to Brian’s daughter. Brian wins but also dies on the battlefield. There is a fine retelling of the story in this YouTube video:


1016 – Death of King Æthelred II ‘the Unready’

After ascending the throne of England for a second time, after his exile in Normandy, Æthelred II dies only two years later. Upon his death, his son Edmund Ironside is crowned king of England.

1066 – Halley’s Comet passes earth

This passing of the comet was witnessed and preserved as a memory in the Bayeux tapestry.
