816 – Coronation of Louis the Pious

This imperial coronation of the son of Charlemagne took place in Rheims, three years after he had already been crowned in Aachen. The sole difference being that in Aachen, there had been no pope around. In 816, Louis did not travel to Rome, but Rome travelled to Rheims in the form of Pope Stephen IV.

See the painting of Louis’ coronation by Fouquet on WikiArts.
