877 – Death of Charles the Bald Charles was the youngest son of Louis the Pious. His life was riddled with fighting the Vikings and their attacks on West Francia. But he also frequently fought his own brothers and family. He died in the French Alps on his way back from Italy. The medieval chroniclers mention particulars about his decaying body, but better read Nelson’s article if you want the (gory) details. See Janet Nelson’s article about Charles’ death on Persee.fr.
