Nowadays, there is the alternative of asking the public to donate a small sum. And many small sums also go a long way. Typically, a web site like Kickstarter or Crowdfunder holds the information for the project and its goals and also offers payment options. A project can range from raising money to make a new video game such as the Banner Saga 3, to hold a Viking Festival, or even fund an archaeological excavation!
